identification
description
Organic 'Atomic' grape tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, an explosion of colors and flavors
The 'Atomic' Grape Tomato is a spectacular variety developed by Wild Boar Farms , known for its uniquely hued tomato selections. Its small, multi-colored fruits change from red to olive green , then take on metallic brown and blue stripes when fully ripe, creating a stunning visual effect. But its appearance isn't its only asset: its flesh is extraordinarily sweet , with excellent vine and post-harvest stability , making it a great option for market growers and gourmet gardeners alike.
Did you know?
Anthocyanin-rich tomatoes, such as 'Atomic', contain antioxidant pigments similar to those in blueberries , which are beneficial for cardiovascular health and cell protection . In addition to their nutritional value , these pigments contribute to the tomato's unique play of color as it ripens
Spread: vigorous growth and climbing habit
Plant height: 150 to 200 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 20 seeds
Companion plants: basil, parsley, carrot, asparagus, alliums, celery, borage, marigold, calendula, mint, sage, peppers, dill (until maturity)
Enemy plants: potato, corn, kohlrabi, beetroot, fennel, peas, squash
Cultivation method
Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting out, then transplant to open ground after the last frost , when night temperatures are above 12°C . Plant 3-6 mm (1/8-1/4") deep , spacing plants 60-90 cm (24-36") apart and rows 120-180 cm (4-6') . This indeterminate variety requires strong staking , as it produces numerous clusters of small tomatoes throughout the season.
Harvesting and storage
Harvest tomatoes when they reach a dominant dark red color with blue highlights , a sign that they are perfectly ripe . Unlike regular tomatoes, their size can vary slightly, so rely on the firmness of the fruit : it should be slightly soft to the touch, but still firm . If the flesh is too hard, leave them on the vine for a few more days.
Another clue: tomatoes that start to pull away easily from the stem are ready to harvest . If you have to pull hard, they still need to ripen.
Store tomatoes at room temperature , in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. For best storage, place them in a cool place (12-21°C) with a relative humidity of 95% . Avoid the refrigerator, as this alters their texture and taste.
Long-term preservation methods
Freezing: Freeze them whole or cut in half for use in sauces or cooked dishes.
Drying: Cut them in half and let them dehydrate to obtain sweet and concentrated tomatoes in taste.
Preserve: make tomato jam or a colorful sauce to add an original touch to your dishes
