Did you know?
Like other indigo-pigmented varieties, 'Dancing with Smurfs' is rich in anthocyanins , natural antioxidants also found in blueberries and black grapes. These compounds play a key role in:
Protection against oxidative stress and cellular aging- Strengthening the immune system
Cardiovascular health by helping to reduce inflammation and improve blood circulation
Eye protection , particularly against blue light and visual fatigue
In addition to its excellent productivity , this variety keeps well after harvest , making it an excellent option for gardeners looking to extend their tasting season.
Spread: vigorous habit and indeterminate growth
Plant height: 150 to 200 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 20 seeds
Companion plants: basil, parsley, carrot, asparagus, alliums, celery, borage, marigold, calendula, mint, sage, peppers, dill (until maturity)
Enemy plants: potato, corn, kohlrabi, beetroot, fennel, peas, squash
Cultivation method
Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting out, then transplant to open ground after the last frost , when night temperatures are above 12°C . Plant 3-6 mm (1/8-1/4") deep , spacing plants 60-90 cm (24-36") apart and rows 120-180 cm (4-6') . This indeterminate variety requires sturdy staking , as it produces a large quantity of small tomatoes throughout the season.
Harvesting and storage
Harvest the fruits when they reach their full red color with a deep purple top . Like most indigo varieties, the more sun they are exposed to, the darker the color will be. For best flavor , let them ripen directly on the vine or harvest them slightly green to ripen off the vine at 72°F (22°C).
Store tomatoes at room temperature , in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. For optimal storage, place them in a cool place (12-21°C) with a relative humidity of 95% . Avoid refrigerating them, as this alters their texture and taste.
Long-term preservation methods
Freezing: Freeze them whole for later use in salads or sauces
Drying: Cut them in half and let them dehydrate to obtain dried cherry tomatoes with an intense flavor.
Preserve: Make cherry tomato jam or a tangy sauce to accompany Mediterranean dishes
