‘Sunrise Bumblebee’ Cherry Tomato, organic seeds (Solanum lycopersicum) Sunrise Bumblebee produces cherry tomatoes with bright orange skin streaked in red, yellow, and gold, plus equally colourful flesh. Gaia describes a sweet flavour suited to snacking and salads. The variety was bred to withstand difficult growing conditions and is known for crack resistance, although this characteristic does not guarantee that every fruit will remain intact. The tall, vigorous, indeterminate plant reaches approximately 5 to 7 feet and requires a trellis, cage, or sturdy stake. Early support keeps the long stems accessible and protects roots from later disturbance during the harvest season.
Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting, approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep. Gaia lists germination in 5 to 10 days from 10 to 35°C, with an optimum of 23 to 29°C. Keep the mix moist without standing water and provide bright light immediately after emergence. Harden plants off gradually by reducing water and nitrogen without allowing wilt. Transplant after frost risk has passed into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Space plants 24 to 36 inches apart and install support at planting time. Good air circulation helps foliage dry after rain and makes mature clusters easier to inspect.
The Gaia specification table lists 70 to 75 days to maturity, a width of 2 to 3 feet, and S/P fruit. Harvest after the orange, red, yellow, and gold streaking is fully expressed for the best taste. Fruit that has begun colouring can finish ripening off the vine above 21°C. The packet contains approximately 25 certified organic, open-pollinated seeds certified by Ecocert Canada. Sunrise Bumblebee can also grow in a 5-gallon or larger container when it is stable, well drained, and fitted with sturdy support. Frequent picking reduces cluster weight and helps damaged or overripe fruit get noticed promptly.
