Organic 'Evening Colors Mix' sunflower (Helianthus annuus) from the seed company Gaia, a two-tone bloom with warm sunset hues

The 'Evening Colors Mix' sunflower is a sumptuous heirloom variety producing two-tone flowers in a palette reminiscent of sunsets: burnt red, golden yellow, copper, mahogany, and warm brown, often adorned with a contrasting dark brown center. Highly ornamental, it brightens flowerbeds all summer long and until the first frosts. Its long, sturdy stems make it an excellent cut flower, while its vigor and abundant flowering attract butterflies, bees, and many other pollinators.

This spectacular mix can reach 1.8 to 2.4 m (72 to 96"), creating an impressive vertical effect in gardens. Like other sunflowers, it slows the growth of plants planted too close together; therefore, it is recommended to provide it with a clear area of at least 30 cm around it.

Farming method

To improve germination, soak the seeds in warm water for up to 12 hours. Then sow directly outdoors in late May, at a depth of 1.2 cm (1/2"). Space plants 30 cm (12") apart and rows 60 cm (24") apart. Place them in full sun (level 3) and water regularly (watering level 3), especially during the early stages of growth.

Germination occurs in 10 to 14 days at temperatures between 21 and 28°C, with an optimum around 23°C. Maturity is reached in approximately 85 days, quickly producing abundant and multicolored blooms.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest the seeds when the flower heads are completely dry on their stems. To protect them from birds and squirrels, cover the heads with a brown bag as soon as the seeds begin to form. The flowers can also be harvested fresh for bouquets.

The petals and young leaves are edible and can be used to decorate dishes or salads.
