Highly floriferous, robust, and easy to grow, these zinnias bring a touch of whimsy to borders, bouquets, and edible gardens.

Farming method

Sow the seeds 4 weeks before the last frost, 3 mm (1/8") deep in a light potting mix. Germination usually occurs in 3 to 5 days, but can take up to 24 days depending on conditions. Avoid disturbing the roots when transplanting: only transplant when the true leaves have appeared and the seedlings are strong enough.

Outdoors, space plants 20 to 45 cm (8 to 18 inches) apart and rows 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches) apart. Choose a very sunny location (sun level 3) and well-drained soil. Water moderately (level 2). Zinnias prefer warm conditions, with an optimal temperature around 23°C for rapid and vigorous growth. They reach maturity in approximately 65 days.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest the flowers before they fully open for better vase life. Cut early in the morning, on a firm, straight stem. Freshly picked flowers retain their vibrancy for a long time, making them ideal for bouquets and floral arrangements.

The petals can also be eaten fresh, adding colour and originality to summer dishes.
