Gaia
Zinnia elegans
Organic 'Persian Carpet' Zinnia Seeds (Zinnia elegans). This open-pollinated annual produces flowers in shades of orange, gold, and mahogany with many distinctive bicolour combinations. Gaia describes it as high yielding for cut-flower production and very attractive to pollinators. The packet contains approximately 25 organic seeds certified by Ecocert Canada and reports germination above 85%. This lot is open-pollinated, but its label does not identify it as heirloom. Kew accepts Zinnia elegans, an annual in the Asteraceae family native from Mexico to Nicaragua. Its warm palette is especially effective in naturalistic borders, colourful beds, and late-summer floral arrangements where every plant can produce several usable stems. For practical seed starting, growing from seed succeeds best when the verified product depth, moisture and temperature guidance is followed.
Sow indoors approximately 4 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow approximately 1/8 inch deep after frost danger has passed. Gaia’s technical table gives a germination range of 5 to 24 days at 20 to 29°C, with an optimum of 23°C; a separate note says emergence may begin in 3 to 5 days. Transplant gently when true leaves appear, before roots become crowded. Grow in full sun and loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants 8 to 18 inches apart and rows 24 to 36 inches apart. Water at soil level when the surface begins to dry and preserve airflow around the foliage. Use the product details as a clear guide on how to start seeds while keeping the growing medium evenly moist, never saturated. For indoor seed starting, count back from local conditions and frost dates to decide when to start indoor seeds.
Gaia lists 75 to 90 days to maturity, a height of 24 to 36 inches, and a width of 10 to 12 inches. Bloom begins in midsummer and continues into early autumn. For bouquets, cut stems before flowers open completely and place them promptly in clean water. Remove faded flowers to support additional buds. If petals will be eaten, use only flowers grown without treatments not labelled for food plants and remove the more bitter central disc. Monitor containers more often because their growing medium dries faster than mulched garden soil, and support tall stems where the planting is exposed to strong wind.
