Farming method

Sow directly outdoors in late May or early June, once the soil temperature reaches 25°C (77°F). You can also start seeds indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost. To encourage germination, soak the seeds in warm water for up to 24 hours and lightly scarify the surface before sowing.

Plant at a depth of 2.5 cm (1"). Space plants 38 to 45 cm (15 to 18") apart and rows 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36") apart. Provide a very sunny location (level 3), rich, loose, well-drained soil, and moderate but consistent watering (level 2). Germination occurs in 7 to 10 days at optimal temperatures of 27 to 35 °C. The compact yet vigorous plant quickly produces its first fruits.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest the squash when they reach 3 to 4 inches, at which point their flesh is at its most tender and flavorful. Regular harvesting encourages continuous production. For storage, keep the fruit at 10–12°C (50–54°F), with 55–75% humidity and good air circulation.
