‘S-51’ okra organic seeds(Abelmoschus esculentus)
Product code : GAIAS-0281
‘S-51’ okra organic seeds (Abelmoschus esculentus) This open-pollinated heirloom develops vigorous productive plants bearing spineless pods that mature early. Young pods are easy to pick and suit stir-fries, pickles, frying, soups, and stews. Large hibiscus-like flowers are also edible and add ornamental interest to the vegetable garden. The Gaia packet contains 25 seeds certified organic by Ecocert Canada. S-51 is especially well suited to gardeners seeking an early traditional okra that is comfortable to harvest during a warm Canadian summer and continues producing when pods are picked frequently, with tender pods for varied recipes.
Soak seeds in warm water for no more than 12 hours, then sow indoors approximately six weeks before planting out. Plant 1/2 inch deep in individual pots and maintain the medium at 18 to 32°C, optimally near 21°C. Emergence generally takes 2 to 12 days. Provide bright light as soon as seedlings appear. Harden plants off gradually and transplant with the entire root ball after soil is warm and frost danger has passed. Allow 18 to 24 inches between plants and approximately 36 inches between rows so air circulates and developing pods remain easy to reach.
Grow okra in full sun and rich, warm, well-drained soil. Established plants tolerate moderate drought, but deep regular watering during flowering supports heavier fruiting. First picking begins at approximately 50 to 65 days. Check plants every two or three days and cut pods while they remain young, tender, and easy to slice; overmature pods become fibrous. Wear long sleeves if leaf hairs irritate the skin. Place unwashed pods in a ventilated container and store for 7 to 10 days at 7 to 10°C. Frequent picking encourages continued flowering and new pod production until cool weather arrives.
