Heritage Artichoke: Green Globe
Green Globe Improved Artichoke (Cynara scolymus), offered by OSC Seeds
The 'Green Globe' artichoke is a hardy heritage variety, well-suited to Canadian climates. It produces deep green buds tinged with purple, with a modest harvest in its first year and larger yields in subsequent years. As the plant is not winter-hardy in colder regions, roots should be dug up and stored indoors for perennial cultivation. Growing up to 1.5 meters tall, this artichoke is both ornamental and delicious.
Spread: 60 to 90 cm
Plant Height: Up to 1.5 meters
Packet Size: Approximately 20 seeds
Companion Plants: Beans, peas, mint
Enemy Plants: Garlic, onions
How to Grow:
Start seeds indoors 8 to 12 weeks before the last frost, sowing them 6 mm deep and maintaining a temperature of 21-26°C for germination in 10 to 15 days. Transplant seedlings into 10 cm pots and grow at 15-21°C. After hardening off, plant them outdoors in full sun, spacing 60 to 90 cm apart with 1.75 m between rows, in deep, organic, well-drained soil. Apply mulch progressively up to 10 cm to retain moisture and prevent summer dormancy caused by excessive heat.
The 'Green Globe' artichoke is an exceptional addition to any vegetable garden, offering beauty and flavor with its harvest of tender, flavorful buds for culinary enthusiasts.
