Marshmallow, ecologically grown seeds
Althaea officinalis
Product code : GAIAS-0202
Marshmallow, ecologically grown seeds (Althaea officinalis) This heirloom perennial in the Malvaceae family forms an upright clump approximately 3 to 5 feet high and 2 to 3 feet wide. Soft-textured leaves and pale flowers bring a natural presence to herb gardens, borders, and moist garden areas. Kew accepts Althaea officinalis and places its native range from Europe to central Siberia and western Pakistan and in northwestern Africa; the species is introduced in Québec and Ontario. Each packet contains 25 ecologically grown, open-pollinated heirloom seeds intended for gardeners seeking a substantial moisture-loving perennial.
Sow indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow approximately 1/4 inch deep when conditions permit. Maintain the growing medium at 18 to 24°C, evenly moist but never saturated. Gaia publishes no specific germination period, so preserve steady moisture and allow the seeds adequate time before considering the sowing unsuccessful. Transplant after frost risk has passed into a sunny position with fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Space plants approximately 2 to 3 feet apart. Water consistently and apply a light mulch to reduce evaporation during hot weather without burying the crown or creating standing moisture around the roots.
Harvest leaves and flowers while the plant is blooming. Roots from an established plant may be harvested in autumn, but digging the root generally removes that plant, so leave some specimens intact when you want the perennial to remain. Dry each plant part separately in a clean, dark, ventilated place and store it in a clearly labelled container. These seeds are sold for horticultural cultivation, not as a ready-to-use natural health product. For medicinal preparation, Health Canada advises professional guidance during pregnancy or breastfeeding and spacing marshmallow-root products from certain medications or other health products.
