Honeydew melon (Cucumis melo), offered by the seed company Weston Seeds

Honeydew melon is a delicious, juicy fruit characterized by a smooth skin and a hard rind that protects a sweet, fragrant, lime-green flesh. These large fruits, weighing 5 to 8 pounds (2.5 to 4 kg), are 7 to 9 inches long and 5 to 6 inches wide.

Ideally grown in regions with good southern exposure, this melon originating from Central Asia conquered French gardens before being introduced to North America in the early 1900s. The vines are vigorous and offer a generous yield while producing fruit that keeps and transports very well.

Days to maturity : 105 to 110 days
Fruit size : 5 to 8 pounds (2.5 to 4 kg)
Height : 12 to 16 inches
Spacing : 30 to 38 inches
Sowing : Direct sowing
Exposure : Full sun

Cultivation method:

Choose a sheltered, south-facing site. Sow 3 to 4 seeds per hill, 1" (2.5 cm) deep, spacing hills 4 to 6' (1.5 to 2 m) apart. Once established, thin to 3 to 4 plants per hill. In short-season areas, start seeds indoors in peat pots about 4 weeks before the last frost. The soil should be warm for best germination, with a temperature of at least 70°F (21°C).

Water regularly to maintain even moisture throughout the season. Harvest fruits when they are sweetly scented and their skins turn from pale green to ivory.
