Carolina hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana) , seeds from Marie-Victorin

The Carolina hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana) , nicknamed "ironwood" by our elders, is a small, hardy and decorative tree. Appreciated for its dense foliage that bursts into flamboyant colors in the fall (yellow, orange, red), it adds a vibrant and warm touch to gardens. At the end of the season, its hanging fruit clusters reinforce its ornamental appeal. Perfect for natural gardens or undergrowth, this shrub offers structure, beauty and habitat for local wildlife.

Spread : 3 to 4 meters
Plant height : 4 to 8 meters
Quantity per pack : 5 seeds
Companion plants : maples, oaks, dogwoods
Enemy plants : none known
Hardiness zone : 3
Exposure : partial shade, sun
Moisture : fresh, well-drained soil

To maximize germination, mix seeds with an equal volume of moist sand or vermiculite, then place in a sealed plastic bag. Refrigerate for at least 90 days (cold stratification). Then sow in the desired location in spring when temperatures are mild, or directly outdoors in fall. Germination will occur the following spring or later.

The Carolina hornbeam is an ideal choice for natural gardens or woodland landscapes. This sturdy little tree not only adds texture and vibrant color, but also supports biodiversity by providing shelter and food for wildlife.

The availability of our seeds varies depending on seasonal availability, production schedules and supplier inventory. Certain varieties may only be offered for a limited time based on their natural growth cycle, sowing period or available stock. These product pages are designed to help and inspire gardeners in choosing the right seeds for vegetable gardens, flower beds, pollinator gardens, container growing, naturalization projects and sustainable outdoor spaces.
