description
Aji Chinchi Orange Hot Pepper (Capsicum baccatum) is an exceptional South American variety valued for its bright orange color at maturity and its highly distinctive tropical aroma. Its fruits offer a fruity, exotic flavor reminiscent of passion fruit and grape, with intense but well-balanced heat of 30,000 to 50,000 SHU. The vigorous plant can reach up to 1.2 m (4 ft) tall and produces generously throughout the season, adding beautiful ornamental value to the vegetable garden and colorful harvests. Grown as an annual in Canada, it is ideal for gardeners seeking a productive, aromatic, and original hot pepper.
Aji Chinchi Orange Hot Pepper grows best in full sun, in rich, fertile, well-drained soil, with regular watering that avoids waterlogging. Start seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost, at a warm temperature of 25 to 30°C (77 to 86°F). Germination can take 10 to 20 days. Once plants have 4 to 6 true leaves, transplant them into larger pots before gradually hardening them off outdoors. After all risk of frost has passed, plant them in the garden, spacing plants 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20 in) apart. Compost and mulch help conserve moisture.
In the garden, this pepper is ideal for collector vegetable gardens, warm locations, large containers, and decorative edible landscapes where a productive tropical variety is desired. It grows well alongside basil, cilantro, tomatoes, and eggplants, while benefiting from being kept away from fennel and beets. Its flowers may attract pollinators, while its orange fruits are excellent fresh, in sauces, marinades, or dried to preserve their aroma all year. Aji Chinchi Orange adds a vivid, fruity, spicy touch to dishes, with a character perfect for hot pepper lovers.
