Native Seed Mix for Cottages and Country Properties

A specialty blend ideal for rural gardeners wanting to combine the natural beauty of wildflowers and native grasses while promoting drought resistance. This blend is designed to thrive in less than ideal soil conditions.

It contains a diverse range of plants adapted to different climates and terrains: 12% Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) , 20% Canadian Wild Rye (Elymus canadensis) , 20% Indian Grass (Sorghastrum nutans) , 15% Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) , 2% New England Aster (Aster novae-angliae) , 1% Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) , 4% Canadian Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) , 5% Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) , 20% Sandseed (Sporobolus cryptandrus) , and 1% Smooth Blue Aster (Aster laevis) .

Spread : Approximately 3-5 m² per pack.
Plant height : Up to 90 cm for flowers, higher for certain grasses.
Quantity per pack : 1 kg or 500 g.
Companion plants : Native wildflowers and grasses.
Enemy plants : Aggressive weeds to control during establishment.

How to Grow :

  • Sowing : Sow in the fall, between October 15 and November 15, for natural stratification in winter, or in spring from April if necessary.
  • Site Preparation : Remove weeds and loosen soil to 1 inch deep for a well-drained seedbed. Broadcast seeds evenly and let nature do its work. For spring planting, ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
  • Maintenance : Water as needed the first season and mow to a height of 20 cm to control aggressive weeds. Hand control of weeds may be necessary during the first few years of establishment.

OSC Recommendations :

Mix in a nurse crop such as annual rye or oats to protect native seeds during their establishment period.
