Discover the plant
Purple Dream Asiatic Lily (Lilium ‘Purple Dream’) produces large upward-facing pink-purple flowers with a soft dark plum centre with abundant freckles. Broadly opening petals create a starry outline and reveal orange-brown anthers that sharpen the contrast. Narrow dark green leaves line straight, compact stems. In gardens and containers, the plant commonly reaches about 75 to 90 cm (30 to 36 in) high and 30 cm (12 in) wide. Summer flowering brings a bright, clean accent to the front or middle of a border without the height of many traditional lilies.
For best results, grow this Asiatic lily in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich and very well-drained soil. The bulb benefits from consistent moisture while roots establish and buds develop, but it does not tolerate standing water. Plant in spring or fall about 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) deep, then keep the base cool with low companion plants or a restrained mulch. Hardy in Zone 2 to 9 according to a specialized Canadian nursery, Purple Dream suits Canadian gardens when winter drainage remains open and the site is protected from strong winds.
This compact pink-purple lily suits borders, colour-rich gardens, group plantings, containers and fresh bouquets. Its unscented flowers fit comfortably near a patio and attract various pollinating insects. Remove faded blooms without cutting green foliage because the leaves continue feeding the bulb until they yellow naturally. Watch for lily beetles, aphids, slugs and snails. True lilies are extremely toxic to cats, including their pollen and water from a vase, so position both garden plants and cut stems completely beyond feline reach. Gloves are also useful for anyone whose skin is sensitive while handling bulbs or stems.
