Organic cinnamon basil (Ocimum basilicum) from McKenzie seed company, an aromatic basil with spicy notes and ornamental flowers
Organic cinnamon basil is a unique and fragrant variety , native to Mexico, renowned for its warm and spicy aroma reminiscent of cinnamon . Its delicate green leaves release a sweet and spicy fragrance, particularly appreciated for flavoring hot drinks , infusions, light desserts, and certain savory dishes. Before going to seed, the plant produces a decorative, deep pink bloom , accompanied by purple bracts , which attracts pollinators and adds ornamental value to the garden.
This annual variety forms an upright, well-branched plant , reaching 45 to 75 cm in height . It is easy to grow , undemanding, and well-suited to cultivation in the ground or in containers . Sensitive to frost, it prefers warmth and full sun , but tolerates drought well once established . Cinnamon basil is safe for bees , attracts pollinators, and is well-regarded in home gardens .

Farming method
Cinnamon basil can be sown directly in the garden once the soil has warmed up and all risk of frost has passed , or started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost for an earlier harvest. The soil temperature should be warm , ideally around 21°C .
Sow at a depth of 3 mm , gently press down the soil, and water with a fine mist to avoid dislodging the seeds. Keep the soil consistently moist , but not waterlogged, until germination, which usually occurs in 7 to 14 days . Once the seedlings are well established, harden them off gradually before transplanting.
Space the plants about 30 cm apart to ensure good air circulation and balanced growth. Cinnamon basil grows best in light, loamy, well-drained soil rich in organic matter . Regular watering, equivalent to 2.5 to 5 cm of water per week , is sufficient.
Harvesting and maintenance
Harvesting can begin approximately 35 days after sowing . Pick the leaves as needed , preferably in the morning when the essential oils are most concentrated. To encourage a bushy and compact shape, regularly pinch the tips once the plant has developed two sets of true leaves .
To avoid bitterness and prolong production, remove the flower stalks by pinching them about 2.5 cm below the flower , unless you wish to enjoy the decorative blooms. Cinnamon basil is more delicate and should be used immediately after harvesting to preserve its aroma.
