description
Organic chives (Allium schoenoprasum) from McKenzie Seeds, a mild perennial herb with a subtle onion flavor
Organic chives are a perennial herb that forms attractive, compact clumps of fine, hollow, bright green leaves resembling blades of grass. The leaves offer a mild, delicate, and balanced onion flavor , perfect for everyday use. When left undisturbed, the plant produces pretty, decorative, lavender-pink flowers that attract pollinators. The clumps become more vigorous over time and can be divided for rejuvenation.
Easy to grow and very versatile , chives have a place in every herb garden , whether in the vegetable patch or in containers . They can also be grown indoors for a year-round harvest. Perennial and hardy , they faithfully return each season with very little maintenance. The leaves are suitable for fresh use, freezing , or drying .

Farming method
Chives can be sown directly in the garden once the soil has warmed up, or started indoors for a quicker harvest. Sow shallowly, cover lightly, and keep the soil moist until germination. They prefer a sunny location but are tolerant of various conditions.
Regular watering promotes continuous growth. Thin out the plants to prevent overcrowding and allow the clumps to develop properly. During periods of intense heat, the plant may enter a temporary dormancy before resuming growth with the return of cooler temperatures.
Harvesting and preservation
The leaves can be harvested as needed , by cutting them near the base to encourage regrowth. Frequent harvesting keeps the foliage tender and flavorful.
Chopped leaves freeze very well and can also be dried for later use. Remove the flowers if you wish to prevent self-seeding.
