description
Organic 'Buttercup' squash (Cucurbita maxima) from McKenzie seed company, a tasty winter squash with dense and sweet flesh
The organic 'Buttercup' squash is recognized as one of the best winter squash varieties , prized for its deep golden-yellow , fine-grained , thick , dry , and naturally sweet flesh. The turban-shaped fruits measure approximately 10 x 15 cm and have a hard, dark green rind , often marbled with grey stripes . Its dense texture and low water content make it ideal for rich and comforting dishes.
A heirloom variety with a vining habit, 'Buttercup' thrives in rich, well-drained soil and full sun . It is bee-friendly and integrates well into traditional companion planting, particularly the Three Sisters system with corn and beans, which helps disrupt pests. During dry periods, generous watering promotes the development of well-formed fruit. Harvest after the first frost or when the area in contact with the soil turns orange , indicating ripeness.

Farming method
'Buttercup' squash seeds can be sown directly outdoors once the soil has warmed up and all risk of frost has passed . The ideal soil temperature is between 15 and 21°C . Sow 2 to 3 seeds per mound , 2.5 cm deep , spacing the mounds 1.5 to 1.8 m apart . Water gently and maintain consistent moisture during germination, which usually occurs in 5 to 12 days .
When the seedlings have developed 2 to 3 pairs of leaves , thin them out to leave only one strong plant per mound . For an earlier harvest, it is possible to start the seedlings indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost , then harden them off and transplant them once conditions are favorable.
Regular watering , equivalent to about 5 cm of water per week , is recommended, particularly during dry periods, in order to obtain well-formed fruit and quality flesh.
Harvesting and preservation
The fruits ripen approximately 90 to 100 days after sowing . Harvest when the skin is hard and the fruit resists the pressure of a fingernail. Allow to cure for a few days in a warm, dry place, then store in a cool, well-ventilated location. 'Buttercup' squash stores very well and even develops more flavor after a few weeks.
Usage ideas
The 'Buttercup' is ideal roasted in the oven , mashed into a purée , stuffed , or added to soups and stews . Its dense flesh is easy to work with and resembles the texture of mashed potatoes, simply seasoned with salt and pepper, or enriched with a drizzle of olive oil.
The organic 'Buttercup' squash from McKenzie Seeds is an exceptional variety , combining high yield , remarkable flavor , and excellent storage qualities . An essential choice for gardeners seeking a rich, sweet winter squash perfectly suited to seasonal cooking.
