'Early Prolific' organic squash (Cucurbita pepo) from McKenzie Seeds, an award-winning, productive and tasty summer squash

The organic 'Early Prolific' squash, also known as Early Prolific Straightneck , is a classic and extremely productive summer squash variety , an All-America Selections (AAS) award winner. Vigorous plants produce abundant, elongated, straight-necked fruits that can be eaten from 10 cm to 30 cm , although the best flavor and most tender texture are achieved when the fruits are 10 to 18 cm long.

The thick, fine, and creamy flesh is particularly prized for its sweetness and subtle buttery flavor when cooked . This variety responds very well to regular harvesting: the more you pick, the more the plant continues to produce. A good indicator of ripeness is to check that the skin pierces easily with a fingernail ; beyond that point, the fruit is overripe.

Adapted to growing in full sun , this summer squash attracts bees and other pollinators and integrates easily into family vegetable gardens. It thrives when planted alongside oregano , zinnias , and nasturtiums , which promote pollination and help protect against certain pests.

Farming method

Pumpkin seeds can be sown directly outdoors once the soil has warmed up and all risk of frost has passed . The ideal soil temperature is between 15 and 21°C . Sow 2 to 3 seeds per mound , 2.5 cm deep , spacing the mounds 1.5 to 1.8 m apart . Water gently and maintain consistent moisture during germination, which usually occurs in 5 to 12 days .

When the seedlings have developed 2 to 3 pairs of leaves , thin them out to leave only one strong plant per mound . For an earlier harvest, the seeds can be started indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost , then hardened off and transplanted into the garden once conditions are favorable.

Regular watering , equivalent to about 5 cm of water per week , is essential to support continuous production and prevent water stress.

Harvesting and maintenance

Harvesting typically begins 42 to 50 days after sowing . Picking the fruit young and frequently stimulates production and maintains optimal quality. A late harvest slows the formation of new fruit.
