Organic 'Table Queen' squash – acorn squash (Cucurbita pepo) from McKenzie seed company, an old variety with sweet and nutty flesh

The organic 'Table Queen' squash is a heritage variety of winter squash , highly prized for its distinctive acorn shape and sweet, nutty flavor . The fruits have a smooth, firm, dark green shell that tapers to a point near the flower, and contain tender, flavorful, light yellow flesh that is delicious after cooking. It resembles a large, green acorn , both elegant and rustic.

This squash is particularly prized for cooking in its half-shell and for stuffing , but it's also excellent for baking , purées, and stews. The plants are vigorous , bush -like, but can also be trained on a trellis or fence to save space in the garden. Farming method

'Table Queen' squash seeds can be sown directly outdoors once the soil has warmed up and all risk of frost has passed . The ideal soil temperature is between 15 and 21°C . Sow 2 to 3 seeds per mound , 2.5 cm deep , spacing the mounds 1.5 to 1.8 m apart . Water gently and maintain consistent moisture during germination, which usually occurs in 5 to 12 days .

When the seedlings have developed 2 to 3 pairs of leaves , thin them out to leave only one strong plant per mound . For an earlier start, the seeds can be started indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost , then hardened off and transplanted into the garden once conditions are favorable.

Regular watering , equivalent to about 5 cm of water per week , is recommended, especially during fruit formation.

Harvesting and preservation

The fruits ripen approximately 80 to 90 days after sowing . Harvest when the skin is hard and resists the pressure of a fingernail. Cut the fruits with a piece of stem attached and let them cure for a few days in a warm, dry place before storing. 'Table Queen' squash keeps very well in a cool, well-ventilated area.
