Farming method
Sow directly in the garden once all risk of frost has passed and the soil temperature is between 5 and 27°C . Lightly press the seeds onto the surface and cover with about 1.3 cm of fine soil , then water gently. Space the seedlings 2.5 cm apart in rows 45 cm apart, then thin to 20 cm between plants when the seedlings have 2 to 3 pairs of leaves.
For an earlier harvest, crisphead lettuce varieties can be sown indoors 4 to 5 weeks before the last frost , then hardened off before transplanting. Keep the soil consistently moist , with about 5 cm of water per week . Grow in full sun or partial shade , and sow successive batches every 3 weeks until August.
Harvesting and preservation
The apple reaches maturity in approximately 75 days , when it is firm to the touch. Harvest by cutting the base of the plant early in the morning to preserve freshness and crispness .
Whole apples can be kept in the refrigerator for several days. To prevent the leaves from bruising, it is recommended to tear them by hand rather than cutting them with a knife.
