Farming method

Sow directly outdoors once the soil has warmed up and all risk of frost has passed. The minimum soil temperature for good germination must exceed 18°C . Watermelon requires full sun (level 3) and rich, loose, well-drained soil.

Form mounds spaced 60 to 90 cm apart and sow 2 to 3 seeds per mound at a depth of approximately 2.5 cm . Lightly firm the soil and water gently to maintain consistent moisture during germination, which usually occurs in 5 to 7 days .

Once the plants are well established, thin them out to keep only the strongest plant per mound. Regular watering, equivalent to about 5 cm of water per week , is essential during flowering and fruit formation .

For cooler regions, seedlings can be started indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost , then transplanted after gradual hardening .

Harvesting and preservation

Harvesting typically begins 75 to 80 days after sowing . The fruits are ready when the tendril near the fruit is completely dry and the spot where it touched the ground turns yellow . Once harvested, watermelons can be stored for several days in a cool, shady place .
