Farming method
The 'Evergreen' bunching onion can be sown directly outdoors from early spring, once the soil can be worked. The ideal soil temperature for germination is between 10 and 35°C , making this variety very adaptable.
Sow at a depth of approximately 1.3 cm (1/2 in) , in rows spaced 30 cm apart. Gently firm the soil after sowing to ensure good seed-to-soil contact, then water lightly. Germination usually occurs in 12 to 14 days . It is essential to maintain consistent moisture during this period, without overwatering.
When the seedlings reach a few centimeters in height and have several leaves, thin them out to maintain a spacing of approximately 5 cm between plants. Regular watering, equivalent to 2.5 to 5 cm of water per week , promotes rapid growth and a tender texture.
For an earlier harvest, seedlings can be started indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost , then transplanted to the garden after hardening off.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvesting begins approximately 60 to 75 days after sowing . Bunches of onions can be harvested as needed , either by cutting the leaves or by pulling up the entire plants when they reach the desired size. Regular harvesting encourages continuous production.
They can be kept in the refrigerator for a few days, but are best eaten fresh to preserve their texture and delicate flavor.
