'Sugar Daddy' organic peas (Pisum sativum) from seed producer McKenzie, a stringless, sweet and productive snap pea
The 'Sugar Daddy' pea is a snap pea variety highly prized for its stringless, tender, and naturally sweet pods . Selected for its ease of cultivation and reliability, it produces large yields of crisp pods that can be eaten whole or harvested later as shelling peas. Its delicate texture and mild flavor make it an excellent choice for fresh consumption, straight from the garden.
The plants are compact and vigorous , reaching a moderate height of 60 to 75 cm, and require little support compared to traditional climbing peas. Farming method
'Sugar Daddy' peas are a cool-season crop . Sow directly outdoors in early spring , as soon as the soil can be worked. The ideal soil temperature for germination is between 10 and 16°C .
To speed up germination, you can soak the seeds for 30 minutes to 24 hours in room-temperature water before sowing. Sow at a depth of 2.5 cm (1 in) , then gently press down the soil to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Maintain consistent moisture during germination, which usually occurs in 5 to 10 days .
Space the plants approximately 10 cm apart , with rows spaced 75 cm apart. Although this variety requires little support, a small trellis or low netting can improve air circulation and facilitate harvesting. Regular watering, equivalent to 2.5 to 5 cm of water per week , is recommended.
Successive sowings every two weeks until mid-June allow the harvest period to be extended.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvesting begins approximately 65 days after sowing . Pick the pods when they are well-developed but still tender for optimal flavor. Frequent harvesting encourages the continuous production of new pods.
'Sugar Daddy' peas are ideally eaten fresh, but can also be refrigerated , frozen or blanched for extended storage.
