Farming method
Radishes are a cool-season crop that are sown directly outdoors in early spring , as soon as the soil can be worked. The ideal soil temperature is between 10 and 16°C . Sow at a depth of 1.3 cm , gently press down the soil to ensure good seed-to-soil contact, then water lightly.
Keep the soil consistently moist , but not waterlogged, during germination, which usually occurs in 4 to 7 days . When the seedlings have developed 2 to 3 pairs of leaves , thin them out to maintain a spacing of about 5 cm between plants, with rows spaced 30 cm apart. Proper thinning is essential to prevent small or misshapen roots.
For continuous harvesting, sow successively every 10 days until temperatures exceed 21°C . Cultivation can resume at the end of summer or the beginning of autumn , when conditions become cooler again.
Harvesting and maintenance
Harvesting typically begins 20 to 30 days after sowing . Harvest the roots as soon as they reach their ideal size to preserve their tenderness and sweetness . Water stress or a late harvest can make radishes more pungent or fibrous.
