Organic 'Beefsteak' tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) from McKenzie seed company, a meaty and flavorful tomato ideal for the table

The 'Beefsteak' tomato is a classic variety renowned for its large, meaty, and juicy fruits , offering a rich and authentic tomato flavor. This determinate variety forms robust and compact plants, producing slightly flattened, globe-shaped tomatoes, perfect for fresh eating.

Its dense, firm flesh, containing less juice than other varieties, makes it an ideal slicing tomato for sandwiches, hamburgers, salads, and vegetable platters. Its sweet and balanced flavor appeals to both traditional tomato lovers and gardeners looking for a reliable and productive variety.

The 'Beefsteak' tomato attracts bees and pollinators , contributing to the biodiversity of the vegetable garden. Thanks to its vigorous growth habit, it does not require staking , making it easy to grow in family gardens, containers, and raised beds.

Farming method

Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost . Sow seeds 6 mm (¼ in) deep in light potting soil and maintain consistent moisture. Germination usually occurs in 7 to 14 days .

Once all risk of frost has passed and the soil temperature reaches 15°C (60°F) , gradually harden off the seedlings and then transplant them into the garden. Choose a sunny location (level 3) , sheltered from strong winds, in rich, loose, and well-drained soil.

Space the plants 60 to 90 cm apart , with rows approximately 90 cm apart. Although staking is not required, light support may be helpful in case of heavy fruit production.

Regular watering is essential, i.e. 2.5 to 5 cm of water per week , applied directly to the soil to limit foliar diseases.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvesting typically begins 65 to 80 days after transplanting . Pick the fruit when it has fully turned red and is slightly soft to the touch. Regular harvesting promotes continuous production.

Tomatoes can be kept for a few days at room temperature and can be refrigerated once fully ripe to prolong their freshness.
