Farming method

Sunflowers do not transplant well and must be sown directly in the ground once all risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up. Choose a location in full sun (level 3) receiving at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.

Sow the seeds 1.3 cm (½ in) deep , then gently press down the soil to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Water gently with a fine mist and maintain consistent moisture during germination, which usually occurs in 7 to 14 days .

Thin the young plants to maintain a spacing of approximately 45 cm between each sunflower, allowing good air circulation and optimal stem development.

Moderate watering, equivalent to 2.5 to 5 cm of water per week , is sufficient once the plant is well established.

Flowering, harvesting and maintenance

Flowering occurs approximately 80 to 90 days after sowing , generally between August and September . The flowers can be left in place to feed pollinators or cut as ornamental flowers .

To harvest the seeds, wait until the back of the flower turns yellow and the seeds are well formed. If the harvest is intended for human consumption, protect the flower heads with netting.
