Lettuce mix, certified organic seeds (Lactuca sativa)
Product code : GAIAS-0275
Lettuce mix, certified organic seeds (Lactuca sativa) This Ecocert Canada certified organic mix combines different lettuce varieties for a diverse harvest of tender leaves. Gaia notes that leaf types are particularly cold tolerant. The annual open-pollinated heirloom mix suits salads, sandwiches, wraps, and fresh garnishes. Its assortment makes it easy to prepare salads with varied forms and textures throughout the cool season. The packet contains approximately 300 seeds and provides enough seed for several sowings and repeated fresh cool-season harvests in home gardens and containers. It suits vegetable plots, raised beds, and well-drained pots.
Direct sow as soon as soil can be worked, 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, or start seed indoors three to four weeks before planting out. Maintain the medium at 5 to 20°C, optimally 16 to 18°C; germination generally takes 7 to 10 days. Most lettuces germinate poorly above 25°C. Thin to approximately 6 inches between plants and allow about 24 inches between rows. Succession sowings during cool weather can extend the period of tender harvests. Keep seedlings in bright light after emergence and rotate containers for balanced growth.
Grow the mix in sun or light partial shade and fertile, cool, well-drained soil. Maintain even moisture to keep leaves tender and limit bitterness. Harvest generally begins 45 to 55 days after sowing. Plants reach approximately 6 to 12 inches in height and width and tolerate temperatures near −7°C. Pick outer leaves as needed or cut young heads. Gaia indicates that flavour is especially pleasant in fall after a few cold nights. Keep clean dry leaves refrigerated and use them promptly for the best texture. Wash harvested leaves only when they are ready to be used.
