How to grow:
Ornamental squash require a warm, sunny climate and rich, well-drained, organic soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. Sow directly outdoors in late May to mid-June at a depth of 1 inch (2.5 cm), planting 4 to 6 seeds per hill, spaced 8 feet (2.4 m) apart. After germination (7 to 10 days), thin to 3 plants per hill. For an earlier start, start indoors 3 weeks before the last frost. Young plants in paper or fiber pots can be transplanted directly into the ground. Be sure to protect ripe fruit from frost to ensure quality.
