'Grand Rapids' Lettuce
Organic 'Grand Rapids' lettuce (Lactuca sativa) from McKenzie seed company, an ultra-early leaf lettuce, sweet and crisp
'Grand Rapids' lettuce is the best-known and most widely cultivated leaf lettuce , prized for its exceptionally rapid growth and naturally crisp texture . It produces medium to large, upright, crinkled , light green leaves with a mild, delicate flavor . The leaves remain tender and flavorful, making it ideal for early, frequent, and repeated harvests .
A tried-and-tested heirloom variety, 'Grand Rapids' is particularly prized for its remarkable earliness , while being slower to bolt than many other lettuces, allowing for a longer growing season in spring and early summer. Grown from open-pollinated seeds , it offers great flexibility in sowing and adapts well to traditional vegetable gardens , raised beds , and containers . Its cultivation is safe for bees and contributes positively to the presence of pollinators in the garden.

Farming method
Sow directly outdoors once the soil has warmed up and all risk of frost has passed. Germination is optimal when the soil temperature is between 5 and 27°C . Prepare loose, rich, and well-drained soil, then sow the seeds approximately 1.3 cm deep in rows spaced 30 cm apart. Water gently after sowing and keep the soil evenly moist , but not waterlogged, throughout germination, which usually occurs in 7 to 10 days . Once the seedlings are well established, thin them as needed to encourage good growth. Sow successive batches every 3 weeks from spring until mid- to late summer to ensure a continuous harvest. Lettuce prefers full sun to partial shade and regular watering of approximately 5 cm of water per week .
Harvesting and preservation
Harvesting typically begins about 45 days after sowing . Harvest the outer leaves as needed, or cut the entire plant when it is well-developed. The leaves are best young, fresh, and crisp . Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
