Nasturtium 'Bijou' (Tropaeolum minus) from McKenzie Seed Company, a compact dwarf mix with bright, edible flowers

The 'Bijou' nasturtium is a dwarf, bushy variety prized for its compact habit and abundant flowering . The plants reach approximately 40 cm in height and produce a profusion of vibrant, semi-double flowers , held high above the round, decorative foliage. The bright colors, a blend of orange, yellow, and scarlet , add a luminous touch to flowerbeds , borders , and containers .

Easy to grow and undemanding , this nasturtium is ideal for both beginner gardeners and decorative vegetable patches. The flowers and leaves are edible , offering a peppery, fresh flavor that enhances salads and vegetable dishes. Farming method

Nasturtiums do not transplant well and should be sown directly outdoors once the soil has warmed up and all risk of frost has passed . The ideal soil temperature for germination is below 12°C (54°F); lower temperatures can slow emergence. Choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of sun per day, in well-drained soil.

Sow at a depth of 2.5 cm , gently pressing the soil to ensure good seed-to-soil contact, then water delicately with a fine mist . Keep the soil evenly moist , but not waterlogged, throughout germination, which usually occurs in 7 to 21 days . When the seedlings have developed 2 to 3 pairs of leaves , thin them to a spacing of approximately 20 cm , promoting good air circulation and balanced growth.

Flowering and maintenance

Flowering typically begins 32 to 40 days after sowing and continues until the first frosts . Moderate watering, equivalent to 2.5 to 5 cm of water per week , is sufficient once the plants are established. Excessive fertilization is unnecessary and may even reduce flowering.
