'Lisbon Bunching' onion bunching on ribbon (Allium cepa) from McKenzie Seeds, a fast-growing, mild and versatile green onion

The 'Lisbon Bunching' bunching onion is a classic green onion variety , prized for its rapid growth , crisp flesh , and pungent yet balanced flavor . The stems and small bulbs are a bright silvery white , with fresh, tender, and aromatic green foliage. Unlike bulb onions, this variety is harvested young and eaten whole, making it a staple in fresh cooking.

As with all tapes, maintaining consistent moisture during germination is essential . This variety is not sensitive to day length , allowing for successive sowings from spring until the end of summer. It is safe for bees , attracts pollinators , and exhibits good deer resistance .

Farming method

Sow directly outdoors in early spring , as soon as the soil can be worked and all risk of severe frost has passed . The optimal soil temperature for germination is between 10 and 35°C . Prepare loose, well-drained, and rich soil .

Sow in shallow rows 6 to 13 mm deep, spaced 30 cm apart. Tear the seed tape , place it in the furrow, water thoroughly, and then cover with about 1.3 cm of soil . Water gently again. It is crucial to keep the soil consistently moist , but not soggy, throughout germination, which usually takes 12 to 14 days .

Carry out successive sowings every 3 to 4 weeks , from spring until August , in order to ensure a continuous supply of green onions.

Bunching onions prefer full sun exposure (level 3) and light but regular watering , equivalent to about 2.5 cm of water per week .

Harvesting and preservation

Harvesting typically begins 60 to 110 days after sowing , depending on the desired size. Harvest the entire plants when they reach the desired size. Bunched onions are best eaten fresh , but can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator.
