Myrica pensylvanica
Myrica pensylvanica, also known as Pennsylvania myrtle or northern bayberry, is a highly valued native deciduous shrub prized for its exceptional hardiness and ability to adapt to challenging conditions. This species forms a dense, rounded bush with grayish-green foliage that is slightly aromatic when crushed. The narrow, leathery leaves create a light, natural texture that fits perfectly into naturalistic gardens, informal hedges, or coastal plantings. In spring, small, inconspicuous flowers appear before giving way to waxy, silver-gray berries that are particularly decorative in autumn and winter. These persistent fruits are much appreciated by birds and were traditionally used to make scented candles. Very tolerant, this shrub can withstand poor, sandy, and saline soils while fixing nitrogen in the soil.
