Old field pumpkin, ideal for pies and processing
'Connecticut Field' lantern pumpkin ( Cucurbita pepo ), offered by OSC Seeds
One of the oldest heritage varieties, cultivated since the early 1700s , “Connecticut Field” remains Ontario’s premier processing pumpkin. It produces large , dark orange fruits with thick , fine- textured, sweet , dark yellow flesh—perfect for pies , purées, and fall recipes. The flat, globular fruits with few ribs average 11 kg and can reach up to 50 cm in diameter. Reliable, hardy, and productive, it is a must-have variety for field crops.
Propagation: Indoor sowing or direct sowing in late spring
Height/Habit: Vigorous, creeping vines
Package size: Approximately 20 to 25 seeds
Harvest time: 120 days
Frost tolerance: Killed by frost
Companion plants: Corn, beans, nasturtiums
Incompatible plants: Other closely related cucurbits (competition and cross-pollination)
Planting and maintenance:
Plant in full sun in rich, deep, well-drained soil. Sow directly when the soil is warm or start indoors 2–3 weeks before planting out. Give the vigorous vines plenty of space, as they easily cover large areas. Water deeply but not excessively. Harvest when the skin becomes hard and uniformly orange, then allow to dry in the sun for a few days to improve storage.
