description
Red-orange kabocha squash, sweet and with a velvety texture
Winter squash “Sunshine F1” ( Cucurbita maxima ), offered by OSC Seeds

Its thick , sweet , nutty flesh is remarkably smooth and fiber-free, regardless of how it is cooked. The vines are vigorous yet compact , offering excellent yields, and the fruits store very well for use throughout the winter.
Propagation: Indoor sowing or direct sowing in late spring
Height/growth habit: Compact vines
Package size: Approximately 15 seeds
Harvest time: 95–105 days
Frost tolerance: Killed by frost
Companion plants: Corn, beans, nasturtiums
Incompatible plants: Other cucurbits that are too similar (competition)
Planting and maintenance:
A warm-weather plant, the Sunshine F1 squash requires full sun and deep, rich, organic, and well-drained soil (pH 5.5 to 6.5 ). Amend generously with compost before planting. Sow directly from late May to mid-June , 2.5 cm deep, in mounds spaced 2.4 m apart, with 4 to 6 seeds per mound. After germination, keep 3 plants per mound. For an early start, begin the seeds indoors 3 weeks before planting out in biodegradable pots (as squash do not transplant well). Protect ripened fruits from frost and cold.
