identification
description
Small, sweet, and juicy watermelons for reliable summer harvests
“Sugar Baby” watermelon ( Citrullus lanatus ), offered by OSC Seeds
A very reliable variety, “Sugar Baby” produces round , sweet , and juicy watermelons about 20 cm in diameter, weighing 4 to 5 kg each. Their red flesh is crisp and deliciously sweet , with very few seeds. The thin but tough rind turns a deep red when fully ripe. An excellent garden variety for warm, sunny climates.
Propagation: Indoor sowing or direct sowing in late spring
Plant height: Creeping vines (variable)
Package size: Approximately 60 seeds
Harvest time: 75 days
Frost tolerance: Killed by frost
Companion plants: Corn, sunflowers, radishes
Incompatible plants: Cucumbers and squash too close together (risk of competition)
Planting and maintenance:
Start seeds indoors 2 to 3 weeks before the last frost, or sow directly when the soil has warmed up. Transplant or sow outdoors in full sun in rich, warm, and very well-drained soil. Allow plenty of space for the vines. Water deeply but less frequently: melons prefer moist but not soggy soil. Reduce watering as the fruit begins to ripen to enhance flavor.
