Deep red radicchio, decorative, rustic and tasty

Radicchio “Verona Red” ( Cichorium intybus ), offered by OSC Seeds

A spectacular variety, “Verona Red” forms spreading , leafy plants, producing small , open, round heads 5 to 10 cm in diameter. The deep red foliage, veined with white, is as beautiful as it is flavorful, with an elegant bitterness typical of radicchio. This variety is remarkably frost -resistant, making it an excellent autumn crop. Demanding yet rewarding, it is prized both in the kitchen and in the vegetable garden.

Note: according to culinary traditions, the terms radicchio , endive and chicory can be used interchangeably.

Propagation: Direct sowing or indoor sowing
Plant height: 20–30 cm
Package size: Approximately 350 seeds
Harvest time: 70–80 days
Frost tolerance: Frost resistant
Companion plants: Lettuce, green onions, beets
Incompatible plants: Chicories growing close together (to avoid competition and bolting)

Planting and maintenance:
Sow in full sun in fertile, cool, well-drained soil. For better colored heads, sow in late summer so that the heads form in cool weather. Space plants 25–30 cm apart. Water regularly to limit excessive bitterness and encourage good head development. Light frost often intensifies the red color and the sweetness of the flesh.
