Winter radish 'China Rose'
identification
description
Dark pink winter radish, juicy, crisp and ideal for preserving
Winter radish “China Rose” ( Raphanus sativus ), offered by OSC Seeds
An heirloom variety cultivated since the late 1880s , 'China Rose' produces long, dark pink to reddish roots, measuring 15 to 20 cm long and 5 to 6.5 cm in diameter. Their white , juicy , crisp , and peppery flesh makes them an excellent winter radish for stir-fries, marinades, Asian dishes, fresh grating, and preserving. While frost-hardy , this radish cannot tolerate winters colder than zone 8 and should therefore be harvested before the first hard frosts.
Propagation: Direct sowing in spring or late summer
Height/Port: Root
Package size: Approximately 300 seeds
Harvest time: 60 days
Frost tolerance: Frost resistant (but not to deep frost)
Companion plants: Lettuce, onions, spinach
Incompatible plants: Other closely related brassicas (competition, pests)
Planting and maintenance:
Sow in full sun in loose, deep, well-drained soil. Space rows 25–30 cm apart, then thin to 7–10 cm to encourage even, well-formed roots. Water regularly to promote gentle growth and prevent hollow roots. Harvest before the first hard frosts to avoid damaging the roots. Excellent for storing in damp sand in a cool cellar.
