description
Old-fashioned black radish, pungent, sturdy and excellent for storage
Winter radish “Round Black Spanish” ( Raphanus sativus ), offered by OSC Seeds
Cultivated well before 1600 , this heritage black radish is almost forgotten—and yet it's exceptional! Its globe-shaped roots, about 10 cm in diameter, have a distinctive black skin and firm, pungent white flesh , ideal for winter dishes, crispy grated vegetables, lacto-fermentation, and thinly sliced salads. It keeps very well and stores for a long time in cool conditions. Although it is frost-resistant , its roots do not survive a deep freeze .
Propagation: Direct sowing
Height/Port: Root
Package size: Approximately 300 seeds
Harvest time: 60 days
Frost tolerance: Frost resistant (but do not allow the roots to freeze)
Companion plants: Lettuce, spinach, onions
Incompatible plants: Other closely related brassicas (competition and diseases)
Planting and maintenance:
Sow directly in full sun in loose, deep, well-drained soil. Sow in rows 30 cm apart and thin to 10 cm to allow for the development of wide roots. Water regularly to prevent the roots from becoming too fibrous. Harvest just before the first hard frosts. Store in slightly damp sand in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated place for long-term storage.
