Common name

Type
Shrub
Family
Viburnaceae

Sambucus nigra 'Laced Up' is a deciduous ornamental black elderberry with a narrow columnar habit and finely cut, almost black foliage, which brings both an architectural and contrasting touch to small gardens, vertical hedges or contemporary designs. In early summer, it is covered with delicately scented pink flowers grouped in umbels, very attractive to butterflies and pollinating insects. These give way to decorative dark berries at the end of the season, useful for wildlife but not edible without cooking. Its vertical growth habit, ease of maintenance, moderate deer resistance and good hardiness down to -34 °C make it a wise choice for integrating verticality and texture into well-drained soils, in full sun to partial shade.
