Pennyroyal
Pennyroyal is a perennial aromatic plant with a low, spreading habit, valued for its highly fragrant foliage and intense minty scent. It forms a dense, natural groundcover that can be used in herb gardens, borders, cool areas, and naturalized landscapes. Its mauve to lilac flowers attract pollinators and add a delicate touch to spaces where a robust, decorative, and distinct aromatic plant is desired, differing from classic mints.
Easy to grow, pennyroyal prefers a location with soft sun or partial shade, in fresh to moist, fertile, and well-drained soil. It appreciates regular watering and can adapt well to more humid garden areas, making it a good option near cool zones or flowerbed borders. Like many mints, it can spread quickly when it thrives, so it is recommended to grow it in pots or in a delimited space to better control its growth.
Traditionally recognized as an aromatic and medicinal plant, pennyroyal should nevertheless be used with great caution, as it is not recommended for regular consumption and can be toxic in certain forms or at high doses. It is therefore mainly of interest as an ornamental, fragrant, and melliferous plant in the garden. It is an original mint for gardeners looking for an aromatic groundcover that is easy to grow and useful for adding fragrance, texture, and biodiversity to outdoor spaces.
