Physocarpus opulifolius, commonly known as common ninebark, is a deciduous ornamental shrub with a broad and rounded habit, prized for its hardiness and great adaptability. Very cold-hardy, it is perfectly suited for northern gardens where it forms dense thickets or informal structural hedges. In spring, it produces corymbs of small, pinkish-white flowers that attract pollinators, followed by decorative reddish fruits in late summer. Its vibrant green, finely lobed foliage creates an interesting texture throughout the season. The mature bark, which exfoliates in thin strips, adds additional winter interest. Physocarpus opulifolius prefers full sun to partial shade and tolerates various types of well-drained soils, even poor or slightly dry ones.
