description
Organic Red Bhut Jolokia Hot Pepper (Capsicum chinense) is an iconic and spectacular variety known for its extremely hot red fruits and striking appearance in the vegetable garden. Its elongated, bumpy, brightly colored peppers bring strong ornamental value, especially when contrasted with green foliage. This vigorous annual reaches about 90 to 120 cm tall with a 40 cm spread, forming an impressive plant in specialty gardens. Its fruity, slightly smoky flavor combined with formidable heat makes it an essential reference for experienced super-hot pepper enthusiasts.
This pepper requires a very warm, sunny, protected location with rich, fertile, slightly acidic to neutral, perfectly drained soil. Start seeds indoors from February to April at 24 to 30°C to support its long growing season in Canada. Growing in 15 to 25 L containers or in a greenhouse is especially recommended to build warmth and make plant protection easier. Deep watering when the soil dries slightly, balanced fertilization, and staking when needed encourage abundant fruiting.
In the garden, Red Bhut Jolokia is ideal for specialty vegetable gardens, greenhouses, and rare Capsicum collections where it becomes a true centerpiece. Its fruits should be used with great caution for extreme hot sauces, chili powders, marinades, and very spicy preparations; gloves are strongly recommended when handling them. It pairs well with tomato, eggplant, carrot, onion, and peas in a diverse vegetable garden. Its small greenish-white flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, supporting biodiversity and harvest quality.
