Organic ‘De Arbol’ hot pepper (Capsicum annuum ‘Chile de Árbol’) is a Mexican heirloom open-pollinated cultivar with small long narrow thin-walled fruit ripening green to bright red. The name means “tree chile” and evokes its upright habit and stems that become woody through the season. Direct heat and bright aroma, slightly smoky after drying, hold an important place in Mexican salsas, broths, marinades, and powders. Fruit retains its red colour well when dried.
Sow indoors February through April, approximately eight to ten weeks before last frost, 0.5–1 cm deep. Maintain 24–30°C until emergence, generally in 10–21 days, then provide intense light. Harden gradually and transplant only after frost once soil is warm and nights remain above approximately 12°C. Choose full sun and rich well-drained soil, water deeply once the surface begins to dry, and feed moderately to support regular production.
The Biologiquement Vôtre workbook lists approximately 10 seeds, height of 60–90 cm, spread near 40 cm, a 15–20 L container, and harvest around 80 days after sowing. The Chile Pepper Institute describes typical fruit 5–8 cm long, but this lot's exact dimensions are not guaranteed. Harvest red for drying, powders, and toasted salsas. Wear gloves during preparation, ventilate while toasting or grinding, and keep labelled powders away from children.
