Cubanelle Sweet Pepper organic seeds (Capsicum annuum) This heirloom Italian frying pepper produces elongated, thin-walled fruit that changes from yellowish green to bright red at full maturity. Its mild, sweet, relatively low-moisture flesh is especially well suited to quick cooking. Peppers can reach about 13 cm long on productive plants in a sunny vegetable garden nearby. Enjoy them sautéed, grilled, stuffed, or added to sauces and sandwiches. Because this is an open-pollinated variety, gardeners can also save seeds from plants grown away from other peppers to reduce unwanted cross-pollination nearby.

Sow Cubanelle pepper seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting. Plant them about 1.3 cm deep in a light seed-starting mix and maintain 25 to 32°C; Gaia identifies 27 to 31°C as the optimal range. Germination generally takes 7 to 21 days. Move seedlings into bright light after emergence. Harden the young plants off gradually, then transplant after the soil has warmed and all risk of frost has passed. Keep the growing mix evenly moist during germination without allowing water to stand around the developing roots.

Grow plants in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil, spacing them about 30 to 46 cm apart. Plants reach approximately 60 to 90 cm tall and mature in 70 to 80 days. Maintain even moisture during flowering and fruit development without saturating the soil. Harvest the first pepper promptly to encourage continued production throughout summer. Cut firm, yellowish-green fruit for frying and quick cooking, or leave peppers on the plant until bright red for a riper flavour. The packet contains 20 certified organic seeds for growing this productive heritage crop.

03 How long does germination take?
7 to 21 days (gradual hardening off recommended) Read the packet directions before starting and keep the label so the variety remains clearly identified throughout the season. Prepare a clean, loose, well-drained growing medium and moisten it before placing the seeds so they are not displaced by the first watering. Keep the seedbed evenly moist without standing water because excess moisture reduces air around developing roots. Move seedlings into bright light as soon as they emerge and rotate containers regularly to encourage balanced growth. Where several seedlings compete for the same space, thin carefully and retain the strongest plants without disturbing their roots.
