description
Organic Orange Pepper ‘Habanada’ (Capsicum chinense) is an exceptional annual variety prized for its tropical aromas reminiscent of habanero, but without the intense heat of hot peppers. Its elongated, slightly wrinkled fruits mature from green to bright orange, adding a luminous and original touch to the vegetable garden. The vigorous plant reaches approximately 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 in) in height and produces generously when the season is warm and sunny. Its sweet, fruity, floral, and highly fragrant flavor makes it a truly unique pepper, ideal for discovering the full aromatic richness of Capsicum chinense without any burning sensation.
Organic Orange Pepper ‘Habanada’ should be sown indoors from February to April, about 8 to 10 weeks before the last expected frost in Canada. Seeds germinate best in warmth, between 24 and 30°C (75 to 86°F), in a light, fertile, well-drained growing mix. After hardening off, transplant seedlings into full sun once all risk of frost has passed, in organic-rich, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil. Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging. Organic mulch and balanced fertilization encourage abundant flowering, strong fruit set, and generous harvests.
In the garden, Organic Orange Pepper ‘Habanada’ is ideal for gourmet vegetable gardens, specialty gardens, and large 15 to 25 L (4 to 7 gal) containers placed on sunny patios. It grows well alongside tomatoes, eggplants, carrots, onions, and peas, while avoiding proximity to beans and fennel whenever possible. Its small white flowers attract bees and other pollinators, supporting biodiversity and fruit production in the vegetable garden. Harvest fruits about 95 days after transplanting, once they are fully orange, then enjoy them fresh, in salads, salsas, stir-fries, grilled dishes, or fragrant stuffed pepper recipes.
