Discover the plant
Marsh marigold (Caltha palustris) is a native wetland perennial that brightens the garden at the very beginning of spring. Its large golden yellow flowers often appear before many other perennials and rise above glossy, rounded, dark green foliage. This early display creates a vivid effect in rain gardens, vegetated swales, pond margins, and natural wet areas. Plants generally reach 20 to 60 cm tall and form dense clumps about 30 to 45 cm wide. Exceptionally hardy, marsh marigold returns reliably each year and remains attractive after flowering because of its vigorous foliage. Its compact, lush habit gives wet landscapes a fresh and established appearance early in the season.
Marsh marigold prefers rich loamy to clay soil that remains consistently moist, wet, or even temporarily flooded. It grows in full sun or partial shade and performs best where the soil never dries completely. Seeds may be sown outdoors in fall or started in spring after soaking and cold stratification. Place them about 3 mm deep in a moisture-retentive medium. After chilling, temperatures near 15 to 18°C encourage germination. In Quebec and elsewhere in Canada, this hardy perennial mainly requires steady moisture, organic mulch, and a light annual application of compost. Once established in a suitable wet site, it needs relatively little intervention beyond regular moisture monitoring.
Marsh marigold is ideal for rain gardens, streambanks, natural ponds, wet ditches, and ecological restoration projects. Its flowers provide nectar and pollen very early in spring when food resources are still scarce for bees and other beneficial insects. Its root system also helps vegetate and stabilize difficult wet soils. It combines naturally with blue flag iris, purple avens, cardinal flower, and moisture-loving sedges. This plant is not intended for culinary use because fresh tissues contain irritating compounds. Its primary value is ecological, ornamental, and landscape-based. By flowering before many surrounding perennials, it brings colour, biodiversity, and seasonal interest to wet areas that are often challenging to plant successfully.
