description
Organic Radish ‘Raxe’ (Raphanus sativus) is a fast, reliable, and easy-to-grow annual variety valued for its round to slightly oval roots with a bright, glossy red color. Its fresh green foliage reaches approximately 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10 in) in height and quickly fills garden rows, raised beds, and containers. Ready to harvest about 27 days after sowing, this radish produces crisp, tender flesh with a pleasant bite. Its excellent uniformity and rapid growth make it an ideal choice for gardeners who want fresh, colorful, flavorful harvests almost throughout the season.
Organic Radish ‘Raxe’ is direct sown outdoors from April to September, as soon as the soil can be worked in Canada. It prefers cool temperatures between 10 and 20°C (50 to 68°F), as well as a location in full sun or light partial shade. Provide light, loose, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil, then sow seeds about 1 cm (3/8 in) deep. Thin seedlings to 5 cm (2 in) apart to encourage well-formed, uniform roots. Regular watering is essential to keep the soil cool and produce tender, crisp radishes that are less likely to become fibrous or overly pungent.
In the garden, Organic Radish ‘Raxe’ fits perfectly into family vegetable gardens, educational gardens, 10 to 15 L (2.5 to 4 gal) containers, and succession plantings between slower-growing vegetables. It grows well alongside parsley, carrots, onions, and beans, while avoiding proximity to hyssop and cabbages whenever possible. Harvest roots young, once they reach their ideal size, to enjoy their best texture in fresh vegetable platters, salads, garnishes, or with butter and salt. If a few plants flower, their white to pink blooms attract bees and other beneficial pollinators.
