description

Hortinova’s ‘Uchiki Kuri’ winter squash is a popular variety for its pear shape and vibrant red-orange skin. Also known as red kuri or Hokkaido squash, it produces medium-sized fruits, weighing between 1 and 2 kg, perfect for comforting cool-season recipes.

Spread: 1.5 to 2 meters
Plant height: 30 to 45 cm
Companion plants: Corn, beans, radishes
Enemy plants: Potato
Latin name: Cucurbita maxima

With its velvety texture and mild chestnut-like flavor, 'Uchiki Kuri' is ideal for soups, stews, purees, and even desserts. Its edible skin makes it easy to prepare, making this squash versatile and practical for a varied and tasty cuisine.

For successful cultivation, sow directly into the ground after all risk of frost, or start seedlings indoors 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting. Sow seeds 2 to 3 cm deep, spacing plants 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for spreading. Germination takes 7 to 14 days.

This squash prefers rich, well-drained soil and full sun exposure. Ensure regular watering, especially during the fruiting period, to promote healthy growth and abundant harvests. Harvest in the fall when the fruits are well colored and their skin is hard. The squashes will then keep for several months in a cool, dry place.

'Uchiki Kuri' squash is a perfect choice for gardeners looking for a delicious, aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-grow variety that will enrich gardens and kitchens with sweet, comforting flavors.
