Syringa vulgaris ‘Yankee Doodle’, commonly known as ‘Yankee Doodle’ common lilac, is a deciduous shrub with an upright, bushy habit, renowned for the exceptional depth of its flower color. In spring, it is covered in large, dense panicles composed of single, very dark purple, almost plum-colored flowers, among the richest of the species. Intensely fragrant, they release a sweet, heady scent typical of lilacs, much appreciated near living areas. Its medium-green, heart-shaped foliage creates a dense mass that works well as an informal hedge, in a bed, or as a specimen plant. Very hardy and long-lasting, Syringa vulgaris ‘Yankee Doodle’ prefers well-drained soil and a sunny exposure to produce abundant and spectacular blooms.
